Overdraft Privilege

United Community has a convenient response to your unexpected banking needs – a financial resource that can cover your overdrafts. As long as you maintain your account in good standing, United Community may elect to pay your overdraft checks and debit card transactions instead of returning them unpaid.

You will be charged service fees for insufficient funds as appropriate; however, you avoid the additional expense of another fee charged by the merchant to whom the check was returned. Stop by any United Community branch location or call us at 713-674-5778 to learn more about Overdraft Privilege.

Overdraft Plans

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, however we pay it anyway. We cover your overdrafts with two different plans:

  • Overdraft Protection Plan: Your savings account acts as a back up to your checking account. Should you not have enough funds available in your checking the remaining balance will be pulled from your savings. This plan is a less expensive option compared to our Overdraft Privilege Plan.
  • Overdraft Privilege Plan: Following 90 days of good account activity, you may be eligible for overdraft coverage up to $500 provided by United Community.

You will be charged a service fee of up to $30 for each overdraft payed. There is no limit on the total fees we may charge you for overdrawing your account.

Overdraft Transaction Options

United Community pays overdrafts at their discretion, which means transactions are not always guaranteed to be paid. Below is a list of authorized and unauthorized overdraft transaction types.

Authorized Overdraft Transaction Types: We authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions.

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

Un-Authorized Overdraft Transaction Types: We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to. If you would like United Community to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions, complete the form below to opt-in to Overdraft Privilege.

  • ATM Transactions
  • Everyday Debit Card Transactions

If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

Disclosure: Overdraft Privilege coverage is available at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize or pay any type of transactions. If your Overdraft Privilege has been disabled, you cannot apply to have the service enabled. Please contact a Service Representative to discuss your options. Members may opt-out of Overdraft Privilege at any time by mail using the address below, calling 713-674-5778, email via unitedccu.com or visiting any of our locations.
